As of spring 2025, the development planning and conceptual design process for the new ADA compliant Sandcastle Playground in Regatta Park is in full swing - pun intended!
The Sandcastle Playground was constructed in 1992 by community volunteers in partnership with Leather's Playground and quickly became the most popular park attraction in Lincoln City. It is still extremely popular today even after 34 years!
The life expectancy for the structure was 20 years. This structure was assessed and determined to be structurally sound and safe, though showing signs of significant wear and decay. The playground also does not include accessible features and the slope of the ground surface exceeds 2%. In order to meet accessibility requirements and to address materials that are beyond their life span, the recommendation is to replace the playground as a whole.
The purpose of this project is to replace the Sandcastle Playground with a new play structure that meets accessibility guidelines and addresses drainage and material degradation. The project includes re-grading the area around the play structure, a new play structure, and new safety surfacing.
A public Open House was held in May 2024. Many people attended this event, sharing their special memories of the current playground, and their ideas for the new playground. The Design Boards from that Open House, as well as the public engagement summary, can be found to the right.
Utilizing the public input received during the Open House, and from 100+ online survey responses, the playground design is in process. A date has not yet been set for construction.
